Lascom ULSP

Coating evaporation laser table (ULSP) removes electric conductive coating from the surface of low-emissivity glass with a speed of 360 mm2/sec. Software supplied together with the table, controls temperature values in each spot of glass of any shape. This would mean that uniform heating can be provided or, vice versa, a desired difference in temperature values can be set, depending on the functional load of the glass area (e.g.: windshield wipers’ parking area additional heating).


Guaranteed laser lifetime makes 50 000 hours with no maintenance involved. Should laser become out of order, Lascom service engineers will come and have the laser replaced. Lascom has extensive information about 500 laser types produced by IPG Photonics. Each of these lasers has a life time above 50 000 hours. Since the moment of the first laser table delivery, only one laser has ever become out of order. However, after a quick repair, the laser was back to work in normal operation.

The laser removes coating with a speed of 8 m/sec on straight lines and 360 mm2/sec on flat areas. When laser technology is compared with the traditional method of acid etching in similar conditions, the speed of removal by laser can be up to 15 times higher.

Regardless of fast speeds, cut-offs accuracy is rather high. The width of a cut off can be adjusted from 50 micron (optionally from 35 micron) up to a few mm. Moreover, the coating can be removed completely on surface areas up to hundreds of square mm. In the air a cut off 0,5 mm wide withstands 1 kilovolt with no electrical breakdown. When a part of a construction (e.g. laminated glass), a 0,05 mm wide cut-off withstands 600 Volts due to the complete coating removal with the help of the laser. At the same time the surface of the glass remains intact.

High productivity and accuracy brings the cost of products down. Moreover the number of personnel involved in the process is also reduced. Only one operator is needed in order to run a line for heated glass production.

Unlike the traditional acid etching method, laser production is absolutely harmless for an operator, which is undoubtedly another important advantage. The harmlessness of laser production is attested to by the results of the testing laboratory.

Work principles

A laser is the core component of the machine, making cutoffs on the glass surface. IPG Photonics produces the lasers and supplies them all over the world. Lascom provides the guarantee period of two years. Reliability of the laser assures up to 50 000 hours of non-stop laser performance (about 4–5 years). The speed of coating removal makes up to 360 mm²/sec.

Protective filter protects from reflected and diffused radiation. For the process control, the filter is equipped with small windows covered with glass which is transparent in the visible light spectrum, but absorbs laser radiation. At the same time the filter prevents combustion products, that appear during the processing of glass, from getting into the ambience.

3 motors move the laser in X, Y, Z coordinates. Motors provide the processing accuracy of 300 micron (0,3 mm) and exactly this value determines the accuracy of the complete system. Should a glass sheet 6 m in length be processed (the so called «jumbo»-size), the maximum possible error in positioning will not be more than 300 micron.

The work surface guarantees the glass does not get damaged, and provided the service and maintenance schedule is followed, it has a long-time resistance to laser radiation. The surface is equipped with an air cushion acting both as transport and a suction clamp when positioning, or loading/unloading. The air cushion serves for easy glass transport or positioning, while suction clamp holds the sheet providing accurate processing.

Positioning locators (stops) come forward for positioning and get retracted afterwards, so as to not be in the way in the process of glass loading/unloading. The locators precisely adjust the glass edges to the coordinate grid.

Machining glass surfaces


Lascom engineers have developed ULSP software. The program not only calculates heat generation, also for complex shapes (Watt per unit of area), but also selects the optimized pattern of cut-offs and busbars. This frees the customer from a (product) prototype production, which again positively influences the self cost of small-batch and one-of-a-kind orders. The pattern layouts produced by the program can be exported in DXF. format.
